The Uwharrie National Forest covers 52,000 acres in Montgomery, Randolph & Davidson Counties. The park offers many activities including the Uwharrie National Forest Trail, mountain bike trails, ATV trails, camping, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, disc golf (at Badin Lake Recreation Area), picnic areas, boat access, and swimming.

There are 14 individual campsites and 2 group campsites available at this location. Two vault toilets and trash cans are located within the campground.  All sites have a table, grill/fire ring, lantern post and camping pad. These sites are suitable for either tents or RV’s. There is no water or electrical hook-ups at this location.  We recommend you bring a cookstove for cooking meals.  This is a very rustic campground.

The Uwharrie National Recreation Trail offers a variety of scenery, streams and rocky terrain. The trail can be hiked in long or short sections, as the trail crosses several access points. The trail is marked with white blazes. Three main trailheads provide access to the trail. These include the beginning (NC Hwy 24/27, 10 miles west of Troy) and ending points (Flint Hill Road, 2 miles east of Ophir), and one on NC Highway 109, eight miles northwest of Troy.

Denson’s Creek Trail is an interpretive trail constructed by the Youth Conservation Corps in 1974. The trail includes a short loop (1 mile) and a longer loop (2.2 miles). A brochure guides the hiker through 17 stops of historical and biological interest. Both loops are well marked with white blazes. The longer loop provides opportunities to enjoy the hilly terrain and the tributaries of the creek. Benches along the trail provide opportunities to relax and listen to the forest sounds. The town of Troy has a nature trail that joins the longer Denson’s Creek Trail and is marked with orange blazes.

Badkin Lake sits on the border of Montgomery and Stanly County and is adjacent to the Uwharrie National Forest. The reservoir covers an area of 5,350 acres with 115 miles of shoreline, and a maximum depth of 200 feet. Water fluctuations are minor. The Badin Lake Recreation Area offers swimming, boating, fishing, hunting, hiking trails, equestrian trails, four-wheel drive trails, mountain biking trails & camping opportunities. The Cove Boat Launch is located on Cove Road near Arrowhead Campground & offers access to Badin Lake for trailered boats.

NC Wildlife Resources maintains this fishing and canoe access along the Uwharrie River.

Near 2410 Flint Hill Road, Troy, NC. Click here for directions from the beginning of Ophir Road on NC 109 to the Jumping Off Rock/Dark Mountain Trailhead. When coming from NC 109, the trailhead will be on the right side of Flint Hill Road. Jumping Off Rock Trailhead (also known as Dark Mountain Trailhead) is the northernmost trailhead for the Uwharrie Trail, and overlooks Barnes Creek. There is off-road parking available at the trailhead.

Access to the Uwharrie River at Low Water Bridge Road.

This is a primitive camping area where people camp in self contained RV/Horse Trailers. It is located in an open field with tie outs for the horses. No amenities available. Campers must take their trash with them or take it to the trash dumpster in Canebrake Horse Camp. Also known as Old Horse Camp.

The range has 25-yard pistol and 100-yard rifle ranges.
