The Surry Arts Council in Mount Airy seeks to provide high-quality visual arts, performing arts, historical, and craft experiences for members of the Surry County community and guests from all over. Multiple venues allow the Surry Arts Council to offer a wide and unique range of experiences to visitors. The Surry County Basket Makers host an open meeting on the second Tuesday of each month. Frequently, ten to fifteen makers gather there to weave multiple styles of baskets, most often with reed.  

This is an exciting tour of our historic town and all it’s famous Mayberry landmarks. We’ll start you off at the famous Wally’s Fillin Station, then take a ride down main street and check out all the sites like the Barney’s Cafe, Floyd’s Barber shop, Snappy Lunch and then we’ll swing by Andy’s original homeplace.

Westwood Park is a wooded site with 1.5 miles of nature trails (0.8 miles gravel trail and 0.7 miles paved trail), two lighted ballfields, playground equipment, fitness stations, disc golf (nine holes), 5 miles of mountain bike trails, community fishing pond, shelter, restroom facilities, and paved parking.

Owned by the husband-and-wife team of Christian Krobisch and Melissa Hayes opened their winery in Mount Airty in September. The Tasting Barn (3,000-square feet on a grass terrace) offers 10 varieties with views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Fisher River. The 70-acre property includes vineyards, a trail system from the vineyard down to the Fisher River, a winery and a cottage available for overnight stays. The barn has a modern farmhouse motif with European accents and faces the famous Blue Ridge Mountains.

The historic Gertrude Smith House was built by merchant and landowner Jefferson Davis Smith around the turn of the century.  This Victorian-style home contains period furnishings and is listed on National Register of Historic Places.

The Ararat River Greenway is a paved 2.2-mile paved Greenway Trail from Riverside Park to Tharrington Park (beside Tharrington Elementary School). This section of the Ararat River has been restored and is a great area for wildlife viewing, kayaking, canoeing, and trout fishing. The entire length of the Greenway Trail is stocked with trout. There are multiple canoe/kayak/tube launch stations along the trail as well as multiple areas for sitting by the river. A restroom is available halfway down the trail, off on a side trail to the environmental park. Restrooms are also available at Riverside Park. 

Riverside Park was developed in 1977 and was renovated in 2004 and 2009 to include two picnic shelters, restrooms, lighted soccer field, playground, and green space. A canoe launch and greenway on the Ararat River are now also available at the park. This park also feature a Skate Park. 

Mayberry Campground is a privately owned RV park located in the small town of Mt. Airy, NC which is often referred to as Mayberry.  The land the campground is built on was once part of a 2,000 acre farm owned by the original Siamese twins, Eng and Chang Bunker.  The twins and their wives, Sarah (Eng) and Adelaide (Chang), settled in Mt. Airy, NC.  Eng and Chang each had their own home and would stay at one residence for three nights, then go to the other residence for three nights.
