In 1771, an armed group of backcountry farmers calling themselves Regulators battled with royal governor William Tryon’s militia on land now preserved at Alamance Battleground State Historic Site. Growing anger over expensive land, embezzlement of tax money, and collusion between creditors and public officials led small farmers in piedmont North Carolina to form associations, write petitions, and seek peaceful redress of their grievances. A lack of response from the royal government only deepened the Regulators’ resolve, and rising frustration later gave way to violence. The Regulator movement ended with their defeat at Alamance, but their struggle sent shockwaves through North Carolina and Colonial America, creating tensions that would reignite during the American War for Independence.

The Burlington Tennis Center (BTC) is a state-of-the-art, public facility offering twelve, plexipave, lighted courts, shaded bleachers, and tables for viewing during programs and events.

Burlington BMX is a 501(c)3 non-profit, volunteer-run bicycle motocross track located in Burlington, North Carolina, adjacent to the Burlington Sock Puppets ballpark. Open to riders of all ages, BMX events are sprint bicycle races held on off-road, single-lap racetracks. (Riders pedal through the course, there are no motors in BMX.) This fast, action-packed sport is sanctioned under USABMX. The BMX season runs from March through early December, weather permitting.

The Maynard Aquatic Center (MAC) in Burlington is a year-round facility featuring a large heated pool with both recreational and competition areas. A walk-in ramp provides easy access and a frog slide offers lots of kiddie fun. During the summer season, the side panels enclosing the pool area are removed, and the pool converts to an outdoor facility with a roof to shield swimmers from the sun.

Town and Country Park is a 50-acre natural area tucked inside a residential area and along the banks of the Haw River. The park offers about 2 miles of hiking trails as well as paddle access to the Haw River Trail.

City Park offers more than 75 acres of activities for the entire family. It serves as the home of an amusement area, one only a handful of municipally operated in the state. A fully restored Dentzel Carousel is the highlight of the amusement area. As part of the National Historic Register, the carousel attracts thousands of visitors yearly. Throughout the spring and summer, the park comes alive with events, concert series, and baseball and softball tournaments. The park is located one mile from Downtown Burlington on South Church Street.

The Arboretum at Willowbrook Park in Burlington features a wide, paved walking path that meanders the length of this 17-acre park. The arboretum is full of plant collections including daylilies, hostas, azaleas, roses, hydrangeas, camellias, wetland gardens and more. A creek runs through the park with a wide vegetation buffer brimming with native plants and grasses that provide habitat for wildlife and filters stormwater runoff protecting the water quality of the creek.
